How the instant score works
The instant score reads your homepage the way Google first sees it, measures its speed on a phone with Google's own test, and adds up to 100 points. Here is every check and what it is worth.
What it checks
| Check | Points | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Speed on a phone · 35 | ||
| Google's mobile speed score | 35 | Comes straight from Google PageSpeed Insights. Slow pages lose people before they see your menu, prices or phone number. |
| Google basics · 35 | ||
| Secure (https) | 5 | Browsers warn visitors about sites that are not secure. |
| Page title | 6 | The blue headline people click in Google. |
| Search description | 5 | The line under that headline. A good one gets more clicks from the same ranking. |
| Google is allowed to list it | 6 | A page that tells Google to skip it cannot show up at all. |
| Readable without code | 4 | If the words only appear after code runs, Google may first see an almost empty page. |
| One main heading | 3 | Tells Google what the page is about. |
| Main address set (canonical) | 2 | Keeps duplicate versions of the page from splitting your ranking. |
| Sitemap | 2 | Helps Google find every page. |
| Link preview image | 2 | The picture that shows when someone texts or shares your link. |
| Mobile · 15 | ||
| Built for phones | 8 | Without it, phones show a shrunken desktop page. |
| Tap to call | 7 | On a phone, one tap to call is often the whole sale. |
| Local signals · 15 | ||
| Business details for Google | 6 | Business details in the format Google reads, for nearby searches. |
| Street address | 4 | Confirms where you are for local searches and maps. A business that goes to its customers instead (a food truck, a mobile service) gets full points for naming the area it serves. |
| Opening hours | 5 | One of the most searched things about any local business. A business that works by appointment gets full points for saying so. |
"Could be better" earns half the points for that check. "Fix this" earns none.
How the score adds up
Your score is the points earned out of the points that could be checked, as a number out of 100.
When a check can't run
Some sites block automatic checkers, take too long to answer, or build their content with code after the page loads. When that happens the check says Couldn't check and is left out of the score. It never counts against you. J. Kimber looks at those by hand in your full audit.
What the score doesn't judge
- How your site looks, or who built it.
- Pages other than your homepage. The full audit covers the rest of the site and your Google Business Profile.
- Speed is measured fresh each time, and Google's own score moves a few points between runs. That's normal.
What we read, and what we keep
The checker reads only public pages: your homepage, robots.txt and sitemap. The speed test runs on Google's servers. Nothing about your site is saved unless you ask for the full audit. Privacy details.
